THE Democratic Alliance is mourning the death of its MP, Tarnia Baker, who died after being knocked down by a vehicle in Park Rynie last Friday.

It is understood that Baker (50), was crossing the R102 to greet other party members across the road when she was struck by a truck.

Rob McKenzie of KZN EMS confirmed the incident.

Baker was in the area to attend to her oversight responsibilities as a member of the portfolio committee on water and sanitation in Ugu District Municipality.

She has been described by DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango as a “committed member of the party”.

In a statement issued by the DA Mncwango said she came to the province for a holiday and then combined her time for an oversight visit of the Ugu district.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane also paid tribute to Baker.

“Tarnia was a committed MP, a wonderful and warm person, and a devoted mother and wife,” said Maimane a statement.

The ANC and others parties have sent condolences to Baker’s family and friends.

Mlungisi Johnson, the chairperson of the portfolio committee, said she was devoted to ensuring that the people of this country get access to quality clean water.
