‘DA speaks with forked tongue’

2018-10-18 06:01

In an article dated 30 August 2018, the Democratic Alliance makes erroneous and false statements about the Umdoni Municipality for purposes of cheap politicking ahead of the 2019 election.

The basis of their cheap politicking goes to the core of the municipality’s ability to operate, by stating without any evidence, that the Council Meeting did not have quorum to pass the Annual Budget.

These lies were proved emphatically to be untrue during the Council Meeting dated September 26, 2018, where the DA was presented with the signed attendance register showing emphatically that the Council in fact had quorum, and that the Annual Budget was in fact legally passed.

Despite being presented with the facts, the DA have now resorted to character assassination by justifying their lies with more lies.

They are now insinuating that the register is fake. This insinuation and rumour mongering which some DA councillors are engaged in is not based in fact, and is liable for legal action should they continue to insinuate that the names of the councillors who appeared on the register are complicit in some ridiculous plot.

In addition, if the budget was not passed legally in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act nothing precluded the Mayor to inform COGTA and the MEC within seven days to rectify any abnormalities. The fact that the Mayor did not exercise this right during the window period showcases that all procedures and guidelines were followed.

Moreover, it has been more than four months since the budget has been passed.

If the DA had any legitimate objections to it at the time, they should have raised it timeously.

There are real issues which we must grapple with as a municipality, and erroneously calling a red herring at this point distracts from the real and concrete work we all have to do as Councillors, to better the lives of all citizens of Umdoni.

As the Allied Movement for Change, we have to support the budget and will continue to be progressive to secure benefits for our communities.

Kind regards
