Dangers children face on social media

CHILDREN are becoming so active on social media that schools have had to include rules about cellphones and Tablets as part of normal school regulations.

At a recent meeting at a local primary school, the principal stressed to parents the importance of monitoring the devices and enforcing a set of rules on usage.

A parent of a 12-year-old girl said she allowed her child to use Facebook and WhatsApp, but she monitors the child’s usage every day.

“My daughter is only allowed to use her phone after homework is completed and on weekends. I check her Facebook profile and her WhatsApp contacts and conversations every day,” said the parent.

The mother said she had laid down a firm set of rules before allowing her child access to both media platforms.

“Recently she received an inbox message from a man and the content of the message was inappropriate. My daughter brought it to my attention so I reported the message to Facebook and blocked the man from having any contact with her,” she said.

The mother said the majority of her daughter’s friends were on WhatsApp.

Another mother said her 10-year-old daughter had a cellphone, but it was only for emergencies.

“It’s such an outdated phone which does not accept any chat applications that android phones do. It’s basically for making and receiving calls so that I am able to contact her after school,” said the parent.

She said her child was not allowed to take her cellphone to school.
