THE Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Candice Mashego Dlamini kept her promise of returning to the Bhomela people, which she made some months ago.

Mashego promised the rural women of Bhomela that she will be bring them sewing machines and material during the Rural Women’s Celebration held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre. The Ward 24 co-operative, Similela Co-op at Thosong Centre, is one she visited when she did site visits.

On Thursday Dlamini and MPL Chair, Ruth Bengu, assisted by Cllr Lubanyana, Hibiscus Coast Municipality Chief Whip Cllr Mashimane and the HCM Deputy Mayor Johan De Wet, handed over four new sewing machines to the co-operative.

De Wet welcomed guests and the community applauding the swiftness of the return to the ward by the minister.

“It’s very unusual for a minister to promise something and act on it a short space of time. We are happy that the minister is here today as promised,” said De Wet.

A co-operative member, Zethu Mthiyane, said they are happy government gave them these machines.

Mthiyane said the co-op has been through tough times.

“We have been knocking on government doors since the days of Lynette Zwane and we are happy our cries have been heard.”

The Thusong Centre was built because of a group of women, who had a garden in the area called Ntokozweni, which co-op members were part of.

The new machines will make their work easier as they will now make quilts and place mats.

“It was very difficult to work fast with the small machines we have been using - they were time consuming.

“With these machines everything will be faster,” said Mthiyane.
