Donations to improve people’s welfare

2017-03-09 06:01

IN the past week Ugu District Municipality devoted itself to improving the welfare of communities under Ugu District through numerous donations made to children, youth, senior citizens and the community in gene- ral.

The municipality through the deputy mayor, councillor Mondli Chiliza, donated full school uniforms, food parcels, bursaries and disaster management equipment.

Chiliza communicated the same message during these ceremonies, emphasising that although the municipality’s core function is the provision of water and sanitation services, it has also extended the scope of operation and taken a great interest in education, poverty alleviation and improving the livelihood of communities.

The municipality awarded 37 bursaries on Monday, March 20, 2016.

A total of 36 of the successful applicants were awarded bursaries of R10 000 each and one returning student was awarded with a full bursary of R20 000 totalling R380 000.

“We are planting a seed towards ensuring an improved level of the graduate professional base in the district and we will achieve this through ensuring that education remains at the apex of our priorities in moving our District forward and the Mayor’s Bursary Fund reflects this commitment,” said Chiliza.

School uniforms:

Twenty-five children from the Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Umzumbe Municipality were beneficiaries of full school uniforms and sanitary towels for girls last Wednes- day.

This is part of the municipality’s annual “Dress a Child Campaign”, which aims to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds claim their right to education and not miss school because of not having the necessities.

Food parcels:

The municipality in collaboration with Cyassound Holdings donated food parcels to 60 struggling sole provided households in the district.

Thirty of the beneficiaries were child-headed households and the balance were households headed by senior citizens.

The food parcels consisted of rice, mealie meal, sugar, potatoes, butternut, mixed chicken portions and sunflower oil.

Included to this month’s supply was a mini winter blanket to keep them warm during this coming winter.

“This handover is our gesture to celebrate senior citizens and affirm their importance in society as they are the pillars of our families and communities whilst also assuring child-headed families that government cares about their wellbeing.”

Disaster equipment:

Disaster Management Units in the local municipalities remain geared for inevitable disasters following the district’s donation of firefighting equipment to the tune of R350 000 last Wednesday.

Chiliza officially handed over 12 bunker suits, 12 fire boots, 12 helmets,12 nozzles, 16 hoses (sizes 38 and 64), 16 gumboots and 16 spades.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.
