A MAN (34), from Gcilima near Margate was given two life sentences, plus 69 years in the Pietermaritzburg Circuit Court, sitting at Ramsgate, on Tuesday last week.

His offences were house breaking (with intent to rape), robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape which he committed between 2010 and 2014.

There were two complainants and they were neighbours of the accused.

In December 2010, the accused robbed and raped the first complainant.

In May 2013 the accused returned to complainant one’s house. Again, he threatened her with a knife and proceeded to rape and rob her. He made off with a cellphone and R300.

Then in August 2014, the accused raped and robbed the second complainant. He broke into her house and threatened her with a knife. The woman was alone at the time. After raping her, the accused stole her cellphone and fled.

The accused was sentenced to two life terms and 15 years’ for the rapes, 15 years’ for each of the robbery counts and three years’ for each of the house breaking charges.

“I am really pleased with the fact that as the NPA we are successfully dealing with matters involving sexual predators.

“I hope that this sentence will have the necessary deterrent effect,” said the KZN Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Moipone Noko. The name of the accused has been withheld to protect the identity of the victims, who have been ridiculed by the community.
