UGU has passed the new budget and one hopes that research was done and there is a solid plan in place of how to balance the act of maintaining the ageing infrastructure while providing rural communities with basic services they have never­ enjoyed before.

It is a tough job indeed, but not an impossible one. There are still people who don’t have basic services that we take for granted and we hope they are included in the list. The inevitable increase of water and electricity tariffs is coming. Ugu should ensure that its service matches the high prices.

On Hibiscus side, the standardisation of working hours will ensure that we know who is supposed to be at work, and at what time. We have seen photos of municipality employees at leisure while they are supposed to be working.

This week is Child Protection Week. Let us all work hand in hand to ensure the safety of our children.
