THE 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence began last Sunday, November 25, and yet the community was in shock over the rape of a woman outside a local restaurant just days before.

This is a sad testimony to the crimes being committed in our country on a regular basis. The recent case of rape against a local pastor was also withdrawn this week, another shocking revelation.

One has to ask: Why are these acts of violation being allowed to persist and then treated so lightly?

Our matriculants have just crossed a new threshold in their lives, they will now begin to create a future for themselves — but what kind of future will it be for the youth of South Africa if something does not change drastically to make this a safer country for us all? I sincerely hope that this year the 16 Days of Activism will hit home with every individual.

Support initiatives in your area, volunteer where you can, and let’s all play a more active role in raising kind human beings who will never even consider committing an act of violence against any person, male or female.

Happy reading.
