THE venue of the Ekasi Family Fun Day, organised by South Coast businesses in an effort to fight racism, has been changed.

The event was to be held at Gamalakhe TB Molefe sports grounds, but the venue was changed after concerns about “convenience” for the soccer teams, who will take part in the day, were raised at a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday, said Carisca van Vuuren of SMG South Coast.

The event will now take place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

The duration of each soccer match will be 30 minutes.

“Considering there are two fields, two soccer matches will take place on two fields simultaneously to accommodate the soccer teams who have registered to play,” she said.

Part of the day’s activities include a children’s fun zone, jumping castles, tug of war, egg and spoon race, dance competitions, sack races, face painting, balloons, and more, and security and supervision for the children’s zone will be provided.

Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre was chosen because it is big enough to accommodate vendors.

“We have reserved space for traders who will sell food, and handmade arts and crafts,” she said.

The event will also have a stage where messages of support and entertainment will take place throughout the day. For car enthusiasts, an area has been set aside for them to “show and shine” their vehicles in support of the occasion.

Van Vuuren said she is amazed and grateful for the many South Coast businesses and the South Coast community who have come together to make a difference.

SMG South Coast Dealer Principal, Darren Staats said the importance of the day is to embrace unity.

An invitation is extended to religious organisations and the public to join in and unite against racism on Sunday, 7 February from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free.
