Equally punish all kinds of bigotry

2016-12-22 06:01

TO me, the year 2016 will go down as “The Year of the Bigot.”

From racists to xenophobes to homophobes, all kinds came out of the bush this year.

My list is not complete as there is one bigot that most South Africans tend to ignore or act as if he does not exist.

Do you know who that bigot is? The tribalist. He is very active yet his transgressions go unpunished.

I have noticed that it is not fashionable for people to speak against tribalism and I wonder why.

I have been a victim of both racism and tribalism but I have to tell you, the latter is the worst feeling ever.

Imagine being discriminated against by someone who looks like you. It is very hurtful.

At least with racism, it is expected that at some point in your life, you will encounter some dunderhead who has been raised on a diet of racism.

What is not expected is for one to encounter a tribalist.

I cannot wait for the day all bigots are dealt with equally and thoroughly. I hope the Hate Bill will do just that.
