Exciting start to MTB series

2018-07-19 06:01

THE South Coast Fever MTB & Trail run Series 2018 got under way this past weekend.

An exciting start to this year’s very high expectation series, it truly lived up to all its standards and the weather was as if it was scripted down at The Port Edward Holiday Resort.

Between 400 and 500 riders and runners took part in Sundays Trail run over 10 km & 5 km and MTB over 45 km, 25 km and fun ride of 5 km. It was race one of The South Coast Fever MTB Series 2018 and John Bainbridge and his team pulled out all the stops to make it an amazing event.

There was a substantial food court available to suit everyone’s taste. Rib Rage and Tiagos kept the tummies fed, while Beaver Creek and Great Railroad Brewery quenched parched throats.

There was lots of snacks...from Villa Dore selling their amazing green banana crisps and macadamia nuts, to the Kidz Zone keeping the children happy with popcorn, slush puppies and cotton candy. There was truly something for everyone.

Dura Cycles assisted with last minute cycle emergencies, while Ted and his team entertained the children with face painting, colouring in, giant board games and jumping castles to name but a few. It really was a day of fun for the whole family.

Registration opened at 5.30 am for the trail runners, while they were sipping some local brewed coffee. The 10 km trail run was the first race of the day at 7 am. After a briefing by Dixx, they got going, followed by the 5 km fun run at 7.15 am. The trail run cut-off was 8.30 am.

Then it was the turn of the MTB cyclists — the adrenalin junkies of cycling. The 45 km classic got underway at 8.45 am, followed by the 25 km at 9 am and the fun ride for kids at 9.15 am. Dixx once again made the briefing fun, while complying to all the CSA rules for the event. The winning time for men was 01:42:51 and the ladies 02:05:14. Brent Richter was there to defend his 25 km overall male title for 2017 and the top overall female finisher was Deborah Hughes.

The route was amazing, well marked and got lots of compliments from all the top riders in the series. Well done to all the people involved with this very tedious task — you did an amazing job. A big thank you also to all the owners of the different properties that gave permission for this great route to pass through their property — you made this a memorable event.
