Facebook and religion shouldn’t mix

2016-01-28 06:00

I BELIEVE I was one of the first few 100 South Africans who signed up for Facebook after it became available to everyone in 2006, and it has been a useful tool ever since.

I have been able to find people I went to school with more than 30 years ago and it enables me to stay in touch with family scattered all around the world.

What has been really irritating of late is the apparent hijacking of this site by
people pushing religious agendas. You find a picture of some random guy captioned, “This is Jesus. Type ‘amen’ or you will go to hell.”

Really? Can I enjoy my Facebook in peace? I have nothing against religion and those who practice it, but it becomes a serious problem when they impose their
stupidity on me.

I know many will find it hard to believe, but there is this persistent Facebook page called “Christian mothers against masturbation”. It always pops up, begging me to “like” it. I don’t care what people do to their bodies in private and quite frankly, these Christian mothers shouldn’t as well.

It has also has been revealed that terrorist groups are now using Facebook to recruit in the name of religion.

I am a firm support of regulation of Facebook and I believe religion should be strictly limited on the site.
