Family calls for investigation into death of loved one

A 69-YEAR-OLD man was found dead in Merlewood on Friday after being missing for four days.

Edward “Eddy” Thurston was reported missing by his family last Tuesday after not returning home from visiting friends.

On Friday, a Merlewood resident found his dead body floating in a stream on Oak Avenue, just 60 metres away from his house.

His brother, Raymond Thurston, said it became concerning when Thurston did not return home and they did not believe he had simply drowned at the stream.

“The family believes that there should be a thorough investigation to establish whether there was any foul play in his death other than a mere drowning, especially since he had been missing from his house for four days,” said Raymond.

Police confirmed the incident, saying they awaited post mortem results to confirm the cause of Thurston’s death.

“A man was found lying in a stream on Oak Avenue on Friday at about 11.30 am.

“The deceased was removed to the state mortuary for a post mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

“He was officially identified as Edward Thurston. Post mortem results are still pending,” said Port Shepstone SAPS spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge.

Raymond said Thurston was a fun-loving person who was loved by the community for his charitable efforts within the Merlewood community.

“Eddy was an artisan in the building industry and he was a loved community member, for him to just die like this raises concerns,” Raymond.

He said the family was appealing to anyone with information regarding his whereabouts before he was found dead to come forward and assist the investigation.

Thurston is survived by his wife, four sons, and grandchildren.
