Fighting crime continues in Uvongo

THE St Michael's area, especially near Collin Street, Garden Avenue and Orange Rocks remains a hot spot for house break-ins. The targets are mainly holidaymakers, and incidents occur at night.

This was discussed at the Uvongo Crime and Safety Forum meeting recently, which detailed criminal activities for the month of February and March.

“The number of housebreak incidents were up from the previous month, but not out of control as during previous holiday seasons. This is mainly due to the good work of both SAPS and our Block Watch groups,” said the forum’s chairman, Ernest Booysen.

Foot patrols are being conducted in the problem areas and have proved to be effective thus far.

The area’s WhatsApp group is very popular with 460 members.

It was proposed that a small fee be charged for participants. Funds generated will be used to boost security in the area.

Those at the meeting felt the need to approach building-site workers for names and identity numbers as it is suspected they are involved in petty crimes in the area.

“This needs to be done through the assistance of SAPS,” said Booysen.

The forum has also logged an objection against the issuing of a liquor licence to open a liquor store on the corner of Nicholson and Foster avenues.

“This will pose a security risk for residents, businesses and visitors. A total of 120 signatures have been obtained.”
