LOCAL filmmaker Msa Mbitamkhono recently flew the South Coast flag high once again when he won Best SMME at the MICT Awards 2018, held in Musgrave in Durban on November 21.

This was a step up for him as he won the Runner-Up award at the 2017 event, walking away with the R15 000 cheque, a Brothers Printer, Vodacom hamper and more. Among the prizes this year was a Samsung tablet worth R15 000, an Apple TV as well as a cheque for R15 000.

Mbitamkhono’s partner, Reshma Maharaj from the magazine Enspired Women, also won best woman ICT and best newcomer at the awards.

Mbitamkhono was born in Murchison and grew up in Umthwalume. He currently resides in St Murchison Umtengwane.

Mbitamkhono is the founder and director of two film and video production companies, namely Msalwa Productions and SA Smart Film Art

He discovered a niche of acting talent in the South Coast when he shot a movie called Ngizenze Mina, which will be launched in early December, and which was written by his wife, Lwazi Mbitamkhono.

On September 3, he attended the Nigerian International Film Festival where he got started on another groundbreaking upcoming production, of which he said he will not divulge the details for just yet.

“I went to Nigeria with a broken leg due to a car accident but that was not going to stop me from fulfilling my dream to expand my territory in the film industry,” said Mbitamkhono.

Mbitamkhono is calling upon all emerging filmmakers and actors to come visit his office at Smart Xhange, Port Shepstone, as he is always available to share his experience for free with them as he wants to grow the film industry in the South Coast.

“I would like to thank Smart Xchange for the support, Fathima Sarigat, my wife Lwazi, and my clients; I would not have done it without them,” said Mbitamkhono.
