A FIRE which broke out in Mkholombe on Monday afternoon has left 50 people homeless.

A total of 11 shacks were burnt and firefighters say they even had to cool several gas cylinders.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the fire as all managed to escape.

Paramedics from KZN EMS and firefighters from Hibiscus Coast Fire and Rescue attended to the scene.

According to KZN EMS’s Robert McKenzie, the fire also partially burnt a few other shacks.

No criminal case has been opened and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Simon April, spokesperson for Hibiscus Coast Municipality said its fire crew was alerted just after noon and responded to the fire.

“Due to a restricted access for fire engines a number of hoses had to be run out towards the fire.

“After the fire was put out it was established that six dwellings had been completely gutted while five were partially affected by the fire,” said April.

“Hibiscus Coast Municipality assisted the affected families with some relief items, and no injuries were reported,” he added.

For now, it is suspected that the fire was caused by a faulty primus stove.
