Fire claims one life at Masinenge

AN elderly man died after he succumbing to injuries sustained during a fire at Masinenge­ informal settlement, near Margate on Sunday night.

Paramedics from the Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services and fire fighters from the Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) responded to the incident.

“Eight informal dwellings were completely destroyed by the fire. No one else was injured by the fire, which left several families homeless,” said KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

HCM spokesperson, Simon April, said its fire prevention crew were alerted about a fire in the early morning.

“They responded swiftly and brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to other dwellings, although about eight of them had already caught fire,” he said.

“During the fire suppression, fire fighters encountered a male fatality. Some basic relief of blankets and tents were issued to the victims.”

He said the cause of fire is not yet known, but SAPS is investigating because they were present. - Supplied.
