A NUMBER of Mkholombe residents were left with only the clothes they were wearing when a fire gutted their informal dwelling on Monday afternoon. A total of 22 structures burnt down and there were no injuries reported.
It is alleged the fire was an act of arson after a woman, who doesn’t live in the area, arrived at her boyfriend’s shack and set it alight after a domestic dispute.

Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid confirmed that a woman in her thirties handed herself over and is in custody pending an investigation. Emergency services offered some assistance, but as firefighters fought to contain the fire from spreading, it was too late for Mbali Ngwane, whose shack she was renting had already been razed to the ground.

“I was not at home when this happened and I lost everything in the fire, from my identity document, my children’s grant cards, all our clothing and food,” said Ngwane. Her two children are four and seven respectively. The seven-year-old witnessed the fire burning the home and is in a state of shock and won’t speak.
The Fever is arranging counselling for the child.

Ngwane’s landlord has given her and her children temporary shelter and a blanket nearby, but says she will have to find a way to get back on her feet again.

She would appreciate assistance of any kind, or building material, so she can erect another structure.
Ngwane can be contacted at 063 261 8117.
