A NUMBER of illegal firearms were confiscated from suspects around the district by police last week.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said during an intelligence drive operation in Mathulini near Hibberdene on July 2, four illegal firearms and ammunition were recovered.

“Officers from the Hibberdene Crime Prevention were on duty in the area when they saw a suspicious bakkie driving at around 11.30pm. They stopped the vehicle, but the occupants attempted to flee.

“They managed to apprehend two suspects aged 39 and 43,” said Wiid. Upon searching the vehicle, a Z88 Parabellum pistol, one magazine and nine rounds were found hidden at the back of the seat.

“Both suspects could not produce a licence and charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.”

Last Tuesday during a sting operation, members from the DPCI Organised Crime Unit went to a premises in Scott Street in Port Shepstone where they found a Remmington .22 rifle. “The 33-year-old suspect could not produce a licence. He was charged for being in possession of a firearm without a licence,” said Wiid.

On Friday, Port Shepstone Public Order Policing officers acted on information and went to Phepheni location in St Faiths where they found a 23-year-old suspect at a certain homestead with a pistol and seven rounds hidden in the ceiling.

“He was also charged for possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence,” said Wiid.

All suspects are to appear in court after further investigation. – Supplied.
