AFTER enduring 16 years of domestic abuse in her former marriage, a Hibberdene resident says she has embarked on a mission to extend a helping hand to women who are silently suffering the same fate.

After walking away from her abusive marriage Shireen Govender made it her mission to open up Hope Village, a shelter to house and heal abuse victims.

“I have noticed there is a huge increase with men abuse, yes, domestic violence against men does exist. Sometimes women are unaware that verbal assault can be crippling to a soul. Men are important too, and they are not the only perpetrators of domestic violence,” said Govender.

“The Hope Village Holistic Centre will create a platform where men can get together to create a movement to teach and encourage nurturing fatherhood.

“Men speaking to other men will hopefully get to the heart of the matter. Men should take their rightful place as the head of the family while the woman creates harmony and balance in the household,” she said.

Hope Village will be launched on Saturday December 2 on Hope Park, Diary Road in Marburg.

“The event includes the South Coast Toyo Club, Fast Lane Racing Team and the Old Bastards Motorcycle Club. It will start with a five-kilometre fun walk around the park before the day’s activities begin.

“There will be a lot of activities for everyone, young and old, flea markets, inspirational talks and more.

“Our focus is to create awareness about domestic violence,” said Govender.
