AS the value of the South African rand continues to plummet compared to international currencies motorists can expect further hikes in the price of fuel.

According to cars.co.za there are fuel efficient driving tips, car maintenance and transport alternatives that will keep your money in your pocket.

Changing your driving habits is one way.

• Drive slower - the faster you drive, the more energy (fuel) is required to maintain the speed,

• Accelerating and braking quickly or unnecessarily increases fuel consumption, accelerate slowly and smoothly. When braking, apply the brakes gently or alternatively take your foot off the accelerator.

• Change gears at the right time. It is important to change gears without putting the engine under unnecessary strain. Don’t over-rev the engine when changing gears.

• Reduce your speed or coast towards traffic lights. Be aware of traffic and the road ahead and drive accordingly.

• Avoid excessive idling - if you are idling for longer than one minute, rather turn your engine off.

• If your car has cruise control, use it.

• Plan and combine your everyday driving trips.

• Minimise use of air conditioning

The maintenance of your car also has an impact on fuel consumption. Maintaining your car will ensure that your car functions at optimal level. Regularly service your car - a poorly serviced car will have increased fuel consumption.

Make sure the correct grade motor oil is used as recommended in the vehicle’s manual when it is serviced. The manual also recommends the suitable tyre pressure car as poorly inflated tyres contribute to the consumption of fuel.

As much as it is not convenient to leave your car at home, it is another way to save some money, use public transport, and save. - Supplied.
