SARDINE fever gets hot this winter with warm 22°C surf temperature’s and mild sunny winter days being the order of the day. Be sure to join in the fun on one of the many beautiful blue flag beaches and participate in a variety of fun beach sports on offer.The KZN Sardine Sports Tour (finishing 13 July) offers beach lovers a variety of fun beach sports and games with the Shelly Centre Energy Zone offering beach badminton, volleyball, touch rugby and beach games. The festival tour will be visiting eight beautiful beaches – register on the day for free. Radio Lotus will be broadcasting from Scottburgh Beach so be sure to pop down and meet your favourite jock and stand a chance to win some great prizes. If you fancy a bit of chess then keep a look out for the Giant Beach Chess games sponsored by the Umthunzi Hotel, which is also hosting the inaugural Umthunzi Beach Sports Festival on Umtentweni Beach on the 13 July.The inaugural Monster Marine Meander kicks off as part of the South Coast Sardine Festival on Sunday 17 July. This unique walk has been positioned between two of the most beautiful Blue Flag beaches on the KZN South Coast and is certain to become an annual event.The upbeat event founder, John Irven, Ugu South Coast Tourism chairperson, encourages visitors. “Come join the fun and discover our magical blue flag beaches. We have created this annual event to highlight our unique and beautiful beaches that remain the number one tourism asset on the KZN South Coast. We are especially pleased that funds raised by this event will be donated to our local community project Pollyanna’s Place.”The eight-kilometre walk stretches over some of the most exquisite beach terrain and participants can look forward to local guides discussing fauna and flora whilst en route this exciting walk. Lazer 911 as well as local marshals will be assisting the tourism association with marshalling and the safe-keeping of participants.Online pre-registration is R25 (proceeds to Pollyanna’s Place) goes live shortly.
