THE Gamalakhe bulk water upgrade intervention brings water supply security closer to reality for the Gamalakhe community and outskirts as this multimillion-rand water infrastructure enhancement project progresses.

This bulk water upgrade, the answer to prolonged water blues in the Gamalakhe community, is reaching advanced stages of construction and will benefit an estimated 8 588 households which translates to 60 120 beneficiaries in the Gamalakhe, Qinabhawodi, Esigedleni and parts of KwaNositha and Tin Town communities.

The project contracts run concurrently with 450mm diameter and 6.5km-long steel pipeline being run from the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre to Gamalakhe reservoirs. The construction of a 0.5Ml reinforced concrete reservoir and pump station and the installation of electrical and mechanical equipment at USLC is part of the project.

The completion of this project is estimated for the end of June and on completion, the capacity of our water infrastructure, which is currently under stress, will be enhanced to cope with the high demand and offer beneficiaries of this project an uninterrupted water supply.

This bulk water upgrade also forms part of the municipality’s plans to respond to water provision challenges in the district while conforming the municipality’s adopted approach of its back-to-basics strategy aimed at improving the level of our services as the municipality.

Through this project, 30 local people have been employed with one sub-contractor from Gamalakhe.

More job opportunities are expected to be created with the advancement of the project, which will assist in curbing the triple challenges faced - unemployment, poverty and inequality.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for local communities.
