Get back into the habit of saving water

2015-11-12 06:00

I WONDER how many people remember the drought which afflicted us about 30 years ago.

Remember the buckets of water in everyone’s houses, the basins that were filled and used over and over again to wash hands, the toilet flushed only when necessary and then with a brick in the cistern.

There was no filling of swimming pools and no using hose pipes, and there was the checking of water consumption every day in case you went over the limit and were penalised.

We have to do it all again now and I have come to realise that I have once again taken our water for granted, so am now trying to stop myself when I run the tap or wash dishes or bath (no more now, only shower).

All those years ago, it became a habit. A habit which has, over the years, become slack and now once again, I find myself being conscious of every time I open a tap, use water, shower, wash my hands, etc.

Until, once again, it will become a part of my life.

Quite a challenge, in fact!

For those who have never before lived through a drought, don’t despair.

You can make a difference by cutting down your water usage and still survive.

We all just have to pull together through a hard time.

Instead of taking our water for granted, think before you use it and you will see how much we actually waste this vital commodity.

How can we live without water?
