GOGO Eleanor Ngcobo (85), from Enkulu ward, lives in a dilapidated house which floods whenever it rains.

Ngcobo said her situation saddens her because she votes, but no one cares for her.

Ngcobo said she has applied for an RDP house several times, but was told that because she doesn’t have her own children, she doesn’t qualify for one, and because a grader can’t get to her property.

Ngcobo lives with her four great-grandchildren aged one, three, seven and 20.

She said the mother of two of the children works part-time in Durban, which is why the children are with her.

Ngcobo says one night she had a burglary.

“One night a robber got into the house through a window by removing a burglar guard, which I had made myself for protection. Now I no longer feel safe because everyone knows that I live alone with the children,” said Ngcobo.

During the last rains the house was flooded and lots of their stuff got wet, including the children’s birth certificates.

Gogo Ngcobo asks the municipality to help her because she doesn’t know who the area councillor is.

The municipality was contacted about her situation, and the matter was referred to the special programmes department who will be visiting the gogo soon.

What was also discovered is that Ward 25 where the elderly woman lives has no dedicated councillor the municipality was asked for the reason why this ward is left with no councillor?

Hibiscus coast municipality spokesperson Simon April said there is a councillor, the Ward Councillor is Cllr Samson Danca and though there were problems raised by the community regarding his availability, the Office of the Speaker allocated Cllr Nompumelelo (Sole) Chiyi who is the PR Councillor to assist on matters relating to the Ward.

Cllr Chiyi was not available for comment at the time of press.
