THE Fidelity Security South African National Golden Oldies Rugby Festival will commence at the Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground in Uvongo today (Thursday).

The festival returns to the South Coast for the first time in 15 years and will play host to golden oldies rugby players from all across the country.

The hosts, Riversmead South Coast Warriors Sugar Daddies, will kick-off the action on Thursday, September 20 prior to the official opening this evening.

The closing ceremony will take place on Saturday evening where prizes will be awarded for the most attractive player, the best spirit, and the best dressed pla-yer.

A total of 32 teams, comprising 18 to 22 players over the age of 35, will turn back the clock for three days of rugby and fellowship.

The laws of the game have been modified to reflect the spirit of Golden Oldies rugby.

Most notably, players wear colour-coded shorts or bibs based on age, which restrict tackling and the distance players may cover with ball-in-hand.

The festival will raise funds for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Sub-Union’s club, the academy structures, as well as the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.

The opening ceremony kicks off at 7 pm tonight and the festival will last for three days, running from today, September 20, until Saturday, September 22.
