Swanepoel senior was the helicopter owner, and according to a statement by the Margate Light Plane Clubhouse (MLPC), they had gone to the Eastern Cape to assist Roos, who was stranded with his aeroplane.

Eastern Cape Cluster SAPS spokesperson Captain Mduduzi Godlwana said the bodies were only recovered late last Thursday as earlier attempts to get to the scene had failed.

According to a MLPC statement, Swanepoel’s helicopter took off from Margate Airport just before 2pm on Wednesday and all communication with it was lost a few hours later.

“Taking into consideration that Braam was accompanied by two very experienced pilots, a glimpse of hope lingered, but eventually it was confirmed that the helicopter went down,” read the MLPC statement.

Braam leaves behind his wife Jynie and daughter Meliska.

Braamie leaves his wife of two years, Gereen. They have no children.

“My husband and my father-in-law were wonderful men, always willing to help others,” said Gereen.

She said they were kind, generous and loving people and they will be missed.

“We will miss their jokes, laughters and the wonderful people they were.

“They mean the world to us,” said Gereen.

Gray, who turned 40 in April, leaves behind his life partner Lisa, daughter Melissa and a sister.

He was a well-known Kokstad businessman, and also had business interests in Margate, where he spent most of his time.
