THE Hibiscus Food For Life Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) is seeking donations towards its feeding scheme. The NPO has, for more than 25 years, been feeding the less fortunate in the communities of Marburg, Bhobhoyi, Palmview, White City, Hibberdene and Murchison.Founder Rajen Mahabeer, who also cooks the meals, said the feeding scheme started providing meals for just over 150 pupils of Mdlazi Primary School in Bhobhoyi. Mahabeer said they are now feeding over a 1 000 people every week in the Marburg area and the various clinics they visit once a week.“Once a month we feed senior citizens in Hibberdene near the Spar. We provide meals while they wait in queues to collect their pension. “Some of these residents experience extreme poverty due to low income and unemployment. “In many cases this is the only meal they get for that weekend,” said Mahabeer.Mahabeer said that there is a huge demand for this type of feeding scheme. “A meal costs us R5 and our monthly cost to provide 1000 meals is R20 000. We humbly appeal to the community and businesses to kindly assist us financially to maintain this project. We are preferably seeking cash donations which can be deposited to the NPO’s bank account: Hibiscus Food for Life, Nedbank account number: 239 812 3235, branch 13982. “We will also accept food donations, food items like rice, oil and vegetables.”Contact the NPO on 039 682 3378 or contact Mahabeer on 082 836 2758 or his partner Pat Gungadeen on 078 741 0925.
