High prevalence of Aids needs attention

2015-12-03 06:00

THE DA notes the high prevalence of HIV/Aids in society, particularly among young people, and the devastating impact this has on their life opportunities.

A recent Human Sciences Research Council report estimated that 6.4 million South Africans were living with HIV/Aids despite it being a preventable disease.

In Umzumbe Municipality it is estimated that in 2004,
25 788 people were affected by HIV/Aids. The annual growth rate of HIV infections in Umzumbe is 13% per annum. This has had an impact on the municipal demographics.

Between 2001 and 2007 our population has decreased by more than 20 000 due to the pandemic. Over the past nine years there has been a 32.3% annual growth rate in Aids-related deaths. We need to invest more money to our research institutions and attract international researchers to South Africa by making it easier for them to enter the country and provide research support in exchange for skills and expertise transfer that will develop the talents of South Africa's future.

DA Councillor Umzumbe Municipality
