Holidaymaker drowns at Lucien beach

2015-11-11 06:00

A WOMAN, on holiday on the South Coast, drowned at Lucien beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics arrived at the beach and found that the lifeguards had already started CPR.

“The paramedics took over with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Other emergency services arrived and everyone worked as a team in an attempt to revive her,” said Belinda Catchpole, spokesperson for Kwazulu Private Ambulance.

However, the woman was declared dead at the scene.

Robert McKenzie, spokesperson for KZN EMS, said beach-goers should only enter the water if they are good swimmers.

“There are many cases where the rescuer drowns as well, so make sure you are a confident, strong swimmer,” he said.

He said if the victim is brought to shore the first thing a bystander should do is turn them onto their side and call an ambulance.

“Have someone wait at the parking lot to guide the paramedics to the scene,” he added.

“If the person is not breathing and you know CPR, start that immediately,” said McKenzie.
