A 49-YEAR-OLD woman reportedly drowned at Margate beach on Sunday, September 23.

According to NSRI Shelly Beach station commander Jeremiah Jackson the incident happened just before 2pm on Sunday after- noon.

Jackson said the woman, believed to be from Boksburg, was found in a shallow surf by the beach after reportedly being caught in rip currents south of the Margate fishing pier, an area not protected by duty lifeguards.

“Currents swept her to the beach and Tower 13 lifeguards arriving on the scene pulled the female out of shallow surf and initiated CPR (Cardio Pulonary Resuscitation) efforts which were continued by paramedics.

Sadly, after all CPR efforts were exhausted, the woman was declared deceased,” said Jackson.

Margate police said they were investigating an inquest docket.

“Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the 49-year-old victim but she was declared dead at the scene.

“The body was taken to Port Shepstone government mortuary for a postmortem examination,” said Margate SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka.
