MURCHISON-BORN house deejay, DJ Bruce, returned to Port Shepstone recently to shoot his latest music video for his hit single, Rhythm.

Born Sihle Bruce Jalubani in the Madakane location, his early life was subjected to constant change due to the political violence of the eighties and nineties resulting in him schooling in five primary schools.

Post-94 the violence had died down and Jalubani completed matric at the Ingwemabala Comprehensive High in Bhethani.

He then completed a B.Tech in public relations management and served in various sectors at Ugu District Municipality between 2004 and 2013.

Jalubani said although he had always loved music he never envisioned turning it into a career and merely stumbled upon deejaying while a content producer for Radio Sunny South.

“This one time we hosted DJ Qhawe at a guest mix with his vinyls and turntables.

I loved what he was doing and asked him to teach me, that was in 2004, and since then I haven’t stopped.”

He said his family has been supportive of his career choice. “At first they didn’t think this would turn out to be something serious and I had not told them about my decision to pursue music as a career.

“I think they got to realise how serious this was when I started featuring in radio stations such as Metro FM, Ukhozi FM as a guest deejay.

“Then in 2012 I joined Gagasi FM as a resident deejay.” Rhythm, which he came to Port Shepstone to shoot, is a club banger diversion from his usual deep Afro-soul sound.

It was composed by Harding-born Sphiwe Jula and features Durban singer Skye Wanda.

“My idea was mainly about a song with catchy lyrics and beat that sends you straight to the dance floor.

“I think I’ve managed to do just that with this song,” said Bruce.

On shooting the video in Port Shepstone he said it was his way of saying thank you to his home town for making him the success he is.

“I love my town and its people. For this reason I want to be a part of the upliftment of our communities. I believe this region has a lot of potential in many areas, including the arts.

“The likes of the maskandi icon Phuzekhimisi and the late gospel sensation Sfiso Ncwane, to mention a few, did a good job in terms of putting Ugu on the map, and it is now our turn to take their legacy forward and make a meaningful contribution to the development of the local arts and entertainment sectors.”

DJ Bruce’s music is available on Youtube and iTunes and his social media handle is @djbru cersa on Facebook and Instagram.

Fans can also listen to his weekly mixes on Gagasi FM every Tuesday between 1.20pm and 1.40pm.
