Hunt on for children’s killer

They were stabbed to death at home after their mother allegedly left them alone in the evening and went drinking with friends. Three of the children had their left ears cut off in what is suspected to be muthi related.

Lwandle (4), Sphindile (7) and Lwandile (10) were found inside the house with multiple stab wounds and Bandile (12) was found outside with multiple stab wounds. Bandile’s ear had not been cut off.

Family member Phakamile Mbele confirmed that the children were alone as their 29-year-old mother, Silindile Mbhele, was out drinking. “The mother of these children is always out drinking every weekend and would leave the them alone from Friday to Sunday,” she said.

She said the mother was the only one living with the children. Mbele said on Friday night one of the children ran to the neighbour’s house and told them that their uncle, who doesn’t live at the house, was troubling them, but the neighbours did not act on what the child said. “They say the child returned to the neighbour and told them it was not their uncle, but a man from a nearby location,” she said.

The child then returned home, and they were all found dead the next morning. The Port Edward SAPS are investigating four counts of murder and that of child neglect. A suspect was taken in for questioning, but was later released. The mother told the Fever that said she cannot be held accountable for neglecting them. “They always sleep at the neighbour’s house when I’m out drinking.” When the Ugu District Municipality mayor Mondli Chiliza’s visited the remainder of the family with KZN MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi, the MEC told Mbhele she should have taken the children to the social workers if she felt it was difficult for her to raise them. “We should not associate you with murderers, but what you have said to the media tells a different story,” said Thusi, who told the mother she needs to change her attitude and deal with the fact she has an alcohol problem. The children will be laid to rest at their home on Saturday.
