THE Umzumbe community raised concerns about what they call “illegal sand dumping” in the Mtwalume area where construction of a new shopping centre is taking place.

They say the sand blocks the way to their home as it has been left on the road.

Umzumbe Municipality spokesperson Trevor Khanyile confirmed that complaints against the contractor have been raised by the community.

Khanyile said the contractor is offloading the sand on the road and unconfirmed reports said he got permission from the chief of the area, Inkosi Bhekizizwe Luthuli, to do so.

Luthuli was contacted for confirmation, but said there is no such thing, calling it “typical politics”.

He said would never give anyone permission to block the road.

“That is utter nonsense.

“All I know is the sand is being dumped in a pit and not on the road.

“Who would ever give permission to someone to illegally dump sand on the road? I did not give anyone permission,” said Luthuli.

Luthuli asked that the person who laid the complaint come to him to address the issue.

He said people should stop making false accusations, they should rather report on the progress on the project that is continuing in the area.

Fever was unable to get the name of the construction company for comment at the time of going to press.
