Investigation into ‘missing municipal millions’ ongoing

DESPITE several awards and recognitions, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality might not receive­ a clean audit for the 2017/2018 financial year following an ongoing investigation into the “wasteful expenditure” of R35 million.

This worries councillors as the portfolio committee on municipal accounts is also failing to provide answers to council.

An official at the municipality, who is not authorised to speak to the media, told the Fever that the municipality was far from receiving a clean audit if they fail to produce credible and reliable financial statements of millions spent by officials at the former Ezinqoleni Municipality in just one month.

The Ezinqoleni Municipality has since merged with Hibiscus Coast Municipality to form Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

Some councillors in the ruling party say they want the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional affairs to name those implicated.

Municipal mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said the matter is being investigated.

“Once the investigation has been completed, the municipality will then inform council.”
