Invite to oil and gas use workshop

2018-04-19 06:00

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance is calling on all users of the Indian Ocean on the South coast to its Oil and Gas Awareness Workshop organised by Sasol Africa and Eni italian Oil Corporation on April 16 at the Umtwentweni Library, starting at 10.15 am.

Project officer Sherelee Odayar said the workshop is aimed to highlight and inform affected people and interest groups on the impacts and dangers of offshore oil and gas drilling along the coast of KZN.

“Sasol Africa and Eni Italian Oil Corporation intend to explore and drill for oil and gas along the coast of Port Shepstone, Richards Bay and Durban by not notifying the public through meetings and consultations which is not acceptable by affected communities. KZN is renowned for its famous and beautiful beaches.

“However, healthy oceans are critically important to marine life and to coastal communities whose economies rely on tourism, fishing and recreational activities.”

Odayar said opening up new offshore areas to drilling risks permanent damage to our oceans and beaches.
