THE 17th annual Pro Deo Cycle Tour is finally here and cyclists from all over the country are getting ready to race for a good cause once more for the gruelling over 800km, five-day paddle.

This year they will do it again from September 11 to September 16.

The Pro Deo Care Group is a voluntary, non-profit charity organisation rendering various services to the aged, disabled and cancer sufferers on the South Coast. Their services include amongst others:

• Wellness clinics to the aged and disabled;

• Home-based care for the frail and cancer sufferers working closely with hospice;

• Social home visits and home cleaning services;

• Supplying of adult nappies and supportive equipment like wheelchairs and walking aids; and

• Weekly support at cancer clinics.

According to the chairperson Eloïse van Niekerk, fundraising to sustain and grow their services remains a challenge.

“We are grateful to the very committed group of cyclists who have cycled for us from Johannesburg to Margate over the past 17 years to raise funds for specifically our home-based care for cancer sufferers,” said Van Niekerk.

She said last year these Pro Deo heroes raised over R300 000. However, added that R300 000 was only a drop in the bucket with the ever-increasing need of the aged and cancer sufferers in these tough economic circumstances. The cost of home-based care last year was close to R900 000.

“We are going big this year in joining hands with San Lameer, Margate Round Table, Giants and BMW to host a family fun day on September 16 at the lovely San Lameer golf estate, with golf, a fun run and a mountain bike fun ride while waiting for our cyclists to return home,” said Van Niekerk.

A warm-up spinathon will be held on Spring Day, September 1 in Southbroom to wet the appetite for the fun events on the return of our cyclists.

Fantastic prizes can be won. Join in and support a worthy cause while having fun with live music and a finger lunch. The following people can be contacted for further information:
