Kartik Maas (also known as Damodar) is the most auspicious month in the Vedic calendar and is observed by Hare Krishna devotees. This year Kartik takes place from October 24 to November 23. In the month of Kartik, devotees bathe early in the morning and commence with prayers to maintain a high level of spirituality. Fasting is also practiced.“The most important fact of Kartik is that we should increase our devotional service,” said Rajen Mahabeer of the Hibiscus Food for Life organisation. He said devotees believe that this month is particularly dear to Lord Shri Krishna and followers should try to perform as many good deeds as possible. Many devotees of Lord Krishna give up something they like for a month. By performing this sacrifice, one shows sincere devotion to please the Lord.Offering of clay lamps is also practiced and it is seen as auspicious to feed as many people as you can during this month. The Hibiscus Food for Life organisation will be distributing food to the public every Friday for the month of Kartik next to the Hibberdene Spar. A total of 400 people will be catered for.
