VAGABOND Kayaks held a kayaking demo last Saturday at Ramsgate beach. Members of the public were invited to come and view the variety of kayaks on show. The fun day started at 10 am and lasted until 1 pm at the beach. Kayaks on show included sit-on-top kayaks, sea kayaks, kids sit-on-top and more. The company, Vagabond Kayaks, began in a humble garage earlier this year, however before its inception, there were decades-long friendships built on common passions, expeditions, and shared experiences. The company brought together five friends, Nicola Simpson, James Simpson, Marius du Preez, Celliers Kruger and Lisa de Speville, and turned them into partners with the same motivations, ambitions and goals for their company.Marius du Preez, who is also an Orthopedic surgeon based in Margate, said of the company: “Together, the team are the magic behind our company and between them, our partners have over 140 years of paddling experience.”“The brains behind Vagabond is without a doubt Celliers Kruger. With 16 years of experience in designing and manufacturing high-quality, plastic, rotomoulded kayaks, Celliers is the X-factor in our company,” said du Preez.“In 2015, Celliers left his first kayak company, one that he started in 2002. Being under a restraint-of-trade for three years was challenging, but it did allow him a complete break from the business of kayaking. Instead, he managed to get out more to kayak and to rejuvenate his passion for many paddling disciplines. “He was always looking to do new and different things, and become better with each design, which earned him recognition in the industry for his innovations,” said du Preez. The Vagabond Kayak team hopes that members of the public will get as much joy out of the sport as they do.
