KO Cup attracts many teams

SOCCER teams from various wards gathered at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre on Sunday 8 January for the inaugural TB Molefe Festival KO Cup games.

The games were initially planned for December 2016, but were postponed because of the death of Ugu Mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza.

The games attracted soccer legends of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the family of late TB Molefe, residents and artist Professor Langa.

At the event RNM Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu expressed her happiness about the initiative and its success­.

Teams came from Wards 5, 25, 26, 28 and squads from Murchison, Masinenge and Bhobhoyi. The teams represented those from Harding Cosmos FC, Umnyovu FC, Big Ben Squad FC, Gcilima Peacemakers FC, Gamalakhe United FC and the Gamalakhe Taxi Owners Association.

In first place, crowned the 2016 TB Molefe Festival KO Cup champions­, was team Ward 28. In second place taking the 2016 Western Pirates trophy was Harding Cosmos.

Taking the Goalkeepers of the Tournament trophy, known as Sbababa­ Mbhele/Nciki, were Lungelo­ Shazi and Funo Mzobe.

Sboniso Khumalo was awarded Player of the Tournament and for the leading goal scorer award, known as Rodgers Skhosana Award, was Emihle Mgcotshelwa. The Solly Haffeji trophy­, known as the Young Player of the Tournament trophy was taken by Nkosinathi Mavundla.

Special prizes were given to Gamalakhe Football Association, which included new goalposts, nets, corner flags, referees cards and linesmen flags. Aaron Ntozake, the Gamalakhe Football Association chairperson accepted the awards.

On behalf of Gamalakhe Community Development Foundation, Lindani Mzotho, chair, thanked all the sponsors.

“We would like to thank, Lucky’s Sports & Fishing, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Ugu District Municipality and Architronic for the generous sponsorship,” said Mzotho.
