AS the summer holidays approach the KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism launched the “KZN is Summer Campaign” at St Michaels beach on Saturday.

Ugu District is hosting the campaign for the second time since inception - the first time being five years ago at Margate beach.

Zikalala said as EDTEA they are delighted to join the community of RNM Municipality in celebrating its eighth instalment of what has become a permanent feature on the KZN tourism calendar.

Zikalala said the campaign is an initiative aimed at cementing the province’s dominance over the tourism domestic market.

“Flowing from our vision for tourism to be spread in the length and breadth of the province, the KZN is Summer campaign has for the past seven years been hosted at both coastal and inland municipalities, a decision we took bearing in mind the need to expose tourists to our province in its totality, without prioritising one district, city or town over another,” said Zikalala.

He said the campaign puts government, both at local and national level, at the epicentre of growing and sustaining the tourism sector, including showcasing local and provincial attractions by ensuring an even spread of the tourism cake across KZN.

“KZN is Summer signals the beginning of the festive season, a peak tourism season for our province, and also shows our readiness as a province to welcome tourists.

“The campaign is also a commitment by tourism stakeholders to give excellent service to all tourists leaving them with memories to treasure for life,” he said.

Zikalala said it is an added advantage that Ugu District boasts seven Blue Flag beaches, which is one of the reasons it was decided to be the selling point of the campaign.

“With the launch of KZN is Summer Campaign, we are convinced that, if we work together and allow innovation and creativity to flourish, this sector will make a difference in our people’s lives,” he said.

After the launch stakeholders drove to some of the tourist destinations on the South Coast and returned for entertainment by DJ Sqemeza of Ukhozi FM.
