WELL-KNOWN South African storyteller Gcina Mhlophe is to give free storytelling workshops for Ugu District pupils soon, this in partnership with the Department of Education’s, Education Library Information and Technology Services (Elits).

Mhlophe, as guest speaker, made this commitment at the Storytelling and Heritage Festival at Uvongo Community Hall last Thursday and after watching performances said there is a lot of talent on the South Coast.

“The South Coast always gives me that excitement and I am always happy to be here. There is so much talent here, but what I saw today was far from storytelling, I can call it speech and drama. Don’t be discouraged, but there is a difference between making a speech and telling a story,” said Mhlophe.

She said storytelling has techniques and a storyteller has to make sure that when you’re on stage you focus on your audience and make sure that whatever you are saying is understood.

Mhlophe encouraged the work of teachers and thanked them for putting on the workshop, which is desperately needed.

She said she would return to the South Coast before the end of the year to hold another workshop, the date of which is still to be confirmed.

Mhlophe will be launching her inaugural Gcina Mhlophe Junior StoryTelling Awards this year and wants Ugu District schools to enter next year.
