2016-11-17 06:00

IN 22 days time Ugu District will host the biggest youth sport tournament in the province, the Salga KZN-DSR Games 2016 and the district mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza calls for the community to support these games by rallying behind our athletes.

The Ugu District Community is invited to be part of this sports spectacular, which will begin with the official opening ceremony at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on 8 December.

The starting whistle will blow on 9 December where Ugu will be competing against nine district municipalities and one metro for the number one spot in 16 sporting codes.

The estimated number of over 4 000 participants will be competing in athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, dance, golf, indigenous games, karate, netball, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

Working with local sport federations, schools and municipalities under the district, we unearthed talent to represent the district in the various disciplines and training camps for the chosen squads.

The games will take place in various sports facilities under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, which have been certified credible to be used for a sports tournament of this magnitude.

Games will be held as follows:

Athletics: Marburg Sports Complex

Basketball: Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre

Boxing: ZG Community Hall (Gamalakhe)

Chess: Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre

Cricket: Borough Sports Grounds

Dance: Uvongo Town Hall

Golf: Margate Country Club

Indigenous Games: Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre

Karate: Maveshe Hall (Murchison)

Netball: Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre

Rugby: Douglas Mitchel

Swimming: Marburg Swimming Pool

Tennis: Douglas Mitchell, Uvongo and Umtentweni Tennis Clubs

Table Tennis: ZG Community Hall (Gamalakhe)

Volleyball: Marburg Sports Complex

The Salga KZN-DSR games aim to promote social cohesion through sport and improve the lives of the youth while at the same time bring greater opportunities of improving the state of the economy in different parts of the province.

It is therefore vital that we support these games as they will bring economic spin-offs to our district, assisting the government to move a step closer to triumph over poverty and unemployment.

Core service plans in respect of water and sanitation services are in place for the four-day period as the district expects thousands of visitors. These plans have been put in place to ensure service interruptions are kept to the minimum.

In a case where ad hoc interruptions occur, our experienced team of technicians will be on standby to swiftly mitigate such cases.

Ugu District is the second-time host of these games since 2007 and it is therefore imperative we portray a collaborative approach as government, the private sector and the community to host the best tournament.

Ugu District Municipality promotes working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective, and efficient for our communities.
