Life, and 15 years for woman’s murder

A MAN has been sentenced to life and 15 years for murdering a 64-year-old woman and robbing her tuck shop and loved ones at her home in the Umzinto area last year.

Siyabonga Mkhize (27), and two suspects, went to the tuck shop on the deceased’s premises under the pretext of wanting water to drink.

While the deceased’s daughter went to fetch them water, they shot and killed the woman and stole airtime, cash and cigarettes from the tuck shop.

They also took the woman’s cellphone before entering the house where they threatened two occupants with a firearm and stole their cellphones.

Regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Natasha Kara said the regional court prosecutor, Active Njakazi, handling the case handed in a victim impact statement in aggravation of the sentence.

The victim impact statement, facilitated by court preparation officer Ntuthuko Ngobese, argued the offences committed by the accused were serious and prevalent.

Njakazi argued that the accused could have just threatened the woman with the firearm without killing her.

Kara said the NPA welcomed the sentencing adding that they hoped it would have a deterrent effect on like-minded offenders. - Supplied.
