2016-03-24 06:00

A 39-YEAR-OLD man was handed down a life sentence at Scottburgh Regional Court recently for the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

Sergeant Shaun Pillay of the Family, Child and Sexual Offences Unit, Port Shepstone, investigated the case.

Velani Nyawose, of Ndweni ward Msinsini was sentenced with no conditions.

On 10 January, 2014 the accused lured the mentally challenged teenager into the bushes at Msinsini, where he raped her.

He then took her by taxi to Shelly Beach where he assaulted her and raped her again.

A member of the public came to her assistance after he abandoned her.

“Criminals, especially rapists, seek out women and children, the elderly and mentally impaired as they are often easier targets,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She urged the community to take precautions at home, when on the street and when socialising.

“People and organisations who can assist victims are the police, social workers at your nearest clinic, hospital or municipality, your doctor, teacher, church or spiritual leader, rape counsellor or psychologist.

“Rapists belong behind bars and SAPS encourages victims to report rape,” she added.
