Local woman keeps fighting

2018-06-14 06:01

CONGENITAL Heart Disease, Large ASD, Pulmonary Hypertension and Eisenmonger Syndrome, these are the conditions that 29-year-old Marilyn Rampersad is living with at present.

Having her diagnosis confirmed at Albert Luthuli Hospital and having a second opinion also confirming diagnosis at Gateway Private Hospital, Rampersad is a woman on a mission to overcome all that is hindering her from being a loving mother to her two young sons and a virtuous wife to her husband.

Upon diagnosis, doctors informed Marilyn of the high costs involved with a heart and double lung transplant. As she is not on medical aid, she approached friends and loved ones to help her with these costs, thus creating the Marilyn Medical Fund initiated with the intention of getting community support to assist Marilyn with her plight. The fund was temporarily placed on hold as a government hospital in the Western Cape advised Marilyn that they could offer assistance to her based on an initial assessment of her condition. Marilyn has recently returned from her second trip from the Western Cape facility where she has been undergoing medical therapy with the intention to delay her heart and double lung transplant for as long as possible.

The medical therapy is a quarterly process with the next treatment scheduled for July. During the most recent trip, Marilyn and her husband have had intense discussions with the Head of Pulmonology and Cardiothoracic Surgery on whether to proceed with surgery or continue medical therapy which is fighting the disease with great effect. Marilyn and her husband opted to wait and continue therapy as the treatment is effective. The last resort would be to operate.

The representatives of the Marilyn Medical Fund, are in full support of Marilyn’s decision to continue medical therapy.
“We have deliberated and have come to the conclusion that whether Marilyn proceeds with surgery or not, she will infact still have medical expenses arising which we feel the need to cater for,” they said.

“We have therefore resolved to continue raising funds in aid of Marilyn’s expenses and ask the community to assist us in any way possible to help this young vibrant young lady have the best possible life.”

To assist Marilyn, call Nereshnee Nunnain on 084 569 9151 — Supplied.
