THIS year marks the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth, and local non-profit organisation, Thanda Centre, will be celebrating his legacy on July 18 and 21.

Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better, just as he did every day.

Join Thanda to plant indigenous trees and paint their new Agricultural Hub where over 300 underprivileged farmers in Mtwalume receive mentoring and training and keep their organic vegetables fresh.

Thanda will be hosting two volunteer days for Madibathis year, one on July 18 and one on July 21.

Patrons can participate through planting, painting and volunteering on the day from 9 am to 4 pm on both days.

“It will be a fun day with the opportunity to make a difference as a community on the South Coast, bring your own picnic, water, snacks and sunscreen. This is a child-friendly event with skating and art activities, so you are welcome to bring your children along too,” said Shannon Vaughan, Thanda’s marketing manager.

She said Thanda’s aim is to empower people to create positive change and do so through four core programmes, namely early childhood development, after-school education, creative learning training, and organic farming. The community centre is a safe place where children are free to be themselves and where they can learn, play, and explore. It’s home to the only science lab, library, skate park, and art centre in the municipality, and it’s powered by solar energy.

Thanda impacts over 1 000 people daily.

The Thanda Community Centre is located approximately 25 km inland from Hibberdene, and is easily accessible by car (no 4x4s needed).

Those who can’t make either date but would still like to support Thanda, can visit their website ( to make a donation towards indigenous plants or painting supplies.

RSVP to Shannon by e-mailing or calling 039 699 1253.
