Man faces three counts of child rape

A 57-YEAR-OLD Gamalakhe man was charged with the alleged rape of three minors aged 9, 11 and 13 at the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele the suspect was allegedly found naked at his home by the children’s parents at 2pm on Saturday November 4.

The parents, who live in the same neighbourhood as the suspect, reportedly “stormed” into the suspect’s home after receiving information that their children were there.

“Medical examinations revealed that two of the victims were sexually violated while the findings in respect of the third child were inconclusive,” said Mbhele.

Mbhele said following the incident the suspect was allegedly assaulted by community members and sustained serious injuries that had him hospitalised.

Ugu Cluster police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum encouraged parents to be vigilant in ensuring their children’s safety during the holiday season.

“Statistics reveal that in most instances of child abuse and sexual offences committed on children, the perpetrator is either related or well known to the victim.

“Parents must know where their children are at all times. Before allowing your child to spend time at a friend, neighbour or relative’s house, you should know their background and whether your child will be safe in their environment,” said Pandarum.

“Watch out for warning signs in adults such as insisting on physical affection even when the child looks uncomfortable, insisting on ‘special time’ alone from other adults and children or spending a lot of time with children instead of with adults,” said Pandarum.

He also cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands by assaulting suspects.

“The suspect is still in hospital. The case docket was forwarded to court for the accused to be charged in absentia.

“He will appear in court upon his discharge from hospital. At this stage no case of assault has been opened, and no arrests made,” said Pandarum.

The case is being investigated by detectives from the Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.
