Man gets life for child’s murder

EZINQOLENI man Khulekani Gambushe (28), has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Ezinqoleni Court for the murder of Olwethu Jengu (6) of Nodalane ward.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said Olwethu was on his way home from school on 9 June when he was stopped by the accused.

Mfeka said Gambushe called the six year old because he knew him. He then poured a liquid substance, which he had in possession, over the child.

“After pouring the liquid on the child, the accused took out matches from his pocket and set the child alight. A witness tried to stop the accused, however, they failed as the accused held a knife and chased the witness away,” said Mfeka.

“Olwethu ran to a woman from a nearby family who came out with a blanket and tried put out the fire. The child was taken to Thembalesizwe and then transferred to Murchison Hospital where he later died.

Mfeka said Gambushe was arrested the same day by Ezinqoleni detectives.

“Gambushe appeared at Ezinqoleni Court several times and was sentenced to life last Tuesday,” he said.
