THE National Prosecuting
Authority welcomed the sentence of Velani Nyawose who was given a term of life imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional court on Monday after the court found him guilty of rape.

The complainant, who is mentally challenged, was at Shelly Centre when the accused said he loved her, but she told him she did not believe in love.

He then persuaded her to go with him to his house, which she agreed to. They then went to Port Shepstone and then to Hibberdene where the accused lived.

En route he saw his mother in the field and told the complainant they should use an alternate path. The complainant told him she wanted to go home and walked away.

The accused followed her into the sugar-cane field where he raped her.

Women from the area found the complainant crying at a bus stop and assisted her in reporting the matter to the police.

The accused pleaded not guilty and maintained the complainant had consented to the intercourse.

However, the court dismissed his claims and he was convicted as charged.

This matter was finalised by regional court prosecutor, Sibusiso Mhlongo.
